A charming little place in the center of Sri Lanka that has many thing to offer. Hidden in the fields of green, this place is reachable by a famous train ride. You shouldn’t miss this place while visiting Sri Lanka so be sure to add it to you list.

1. Catch a train ride to Ella

Board the train at Kandy or Nuwara Eliya and enjoy the most scenic train ride. On your way you’ll see never ending fields of green, waterfalls, tea plantations and local children waving at you.

2. Nine Arch Bridge

As the most picturesque place in Ella, you can’t miss this. Nine Arch Bridge is located around 30 min by foot or 10 min by scooter from Ella through the jungle. Best time to visit early in the morning to catch the 6 AM train – the blue one; and as a bonus you get the place all for yourself 🙂

3. Tea Plantation

Ella is surrounded by fields of tea, therefore we recommend visiting a tea factory. A few of them are in the area, we visited Halpe Tea Factory and learned all about the process of making tea. You’ll have a guided tour where they explain and show all five steps of making the tea. At the end you get to taste different kinds of tea they produce and buy them as well. The tour costs 525 LRK (~2.5 €) per person.

4. Little Adams Peak

A perfect easy hike for sunrise. It’s only 15 min walking distance from Ella. The path starts at Ella Flower Garden Resort. The path goes through the tea plantation, and you can see local workers in the field. Climb some stairs and you’ll be on the top.

5. Ella Rock

The larger hill you see from Little Adams Peak is Ella Rock. This will be a more adventurous hike. The hike itself is not very difficult, if you are in a good shape. From Ella it will take you 2 to 4 hours to the top. Start as early as possible to avoid high temperatures. The view from above will be worth it!

6. Join a cooking class at Ella Spice Garden

Learn all about Sri Lankan spices and traditional dishes. At the end of class you’ll have a lovely dinner and you can also buy spices that you used in the class. Make sure to book your spot in advance.

7. Diyaluma Falls

1,5 H scooter ride from Ella, you’ll be rewarded with a pool at the top of the waterfall where you can relax and swim. It’s a bit tricky to get there, cause first you have to ride to the top of the hill and then walk trough the bushes for 15 min. Ask the locals for help a hire a guide that will take you all the way to the top.

Weather in Ella

Ella has the best weather in Sri Lanka, warm days with up to 28°C and cool nights so you can enjoy your sleep. Since Ella is in the hills, this is the perfect gateway from sweaty temperatures.

Where to stay in Ella

Ella offers a variety of hotels, you can stay in a cabin on the hill or overlooking a tea plantation. We stayed at Ella Flower Garden Resort and would highly recommend it. Breakfast was included and the room was overlooking the Ella Rock. Perfect morning view.
The Hotel is right at the path to Little Adams Peak and Nine Arch Bridge.

Where to eat in Ella

Right outside the Ella Flower Garden Hotel is Adam’s Breeze – amazing Sri Lankan food, we recommend getting Kottu Rotti or Curry.
Another great place to eat is 360 Ella. A great place to have Sri Lankan pancakes.
