It was finally time for a four day trip to our neighbors in Slovenia. I love going to Slovenia as people are really kind and I always feel like home there. Although it’s relatively small country, Slovenia has so much to offer, especially beautiful natural sights. It was so hard to choose where to go, but we decided for Bohinj area plus one day trip to well know Bled. I know mountains are the perfect choice for winter in Slovenia, but we didn’t have needed equipment so we went for something less demanding. Plus, you need to know that weather wasn’t on our side at all. It was foggy every day and it even rained. But, we managed to take something good from it. You know that saying, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. πŸ™‚

After seeing this, I think I can believe to a story how Bohinj got its name. πŸ™‚

How Bohinj got its name?

Before we go on, I just want to share an interesting story on how Bohinj got its name. When God was giving land to its people, everyone had demands except a small group of people who quietly waited their turn. But God forgot about them. And when he realized that, he felt pity for them and decided that because they didn’t insist on anything, they deserve the best and the most beautiful land he was saving for himself. And that was Bohinj land. As they call God Boh, the name fits perfectly.

Lake Bohinj is a must!

Bohinj lake is surrounded by mountains. The view here is indeed mesmerizing! Especially in winter with those moody winter vibes.

Lake Bohinj is a must during any season, not just winter. πŸ˜€ Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. It is located in the Bohinj Valley of the Julian Alps. When visiting Slovenia, many people just go to Bled and ignore that a bit further there is the lake that, in my opinion, is even more beautiful then Bled lake. Looking at the mountain just beside the lake was amazing. It was a bit foggy, but the water was still and reflection was indeed mesmerizing. Perfect for us πŸ˜› We went there just before sunset and stayed until it got dark. We got some incredible shots during the blue hour. Make sure to take a walk around the lake, spend some time on the docks and definitely go near the shore to fully enjoy that beautiful view. It’s a perfect place for resting your soul. It’s like a time stops while there.

And of course, don’t forget to take some fancy photos with that beautiful background of Bohinj lake. πŸ˜‰

If you want to see a beautiful view of Bohinj lake from a bit higher perspective, make sure to go to Peč viewpoint. It’s a bit hard to find a way to it when there’s snow (especially if there was a fresh one ), so be careful. Especially if you go during the night like we did. It will take you about 20-30 minutes to the top because the snow makes it harder, but the view is absolutely amazing!

Plus, Vodnikov viewpoint also has an amazing view of Lake Bohinj and the valley. Although, we didn’t go as it was so foggy that there wouldn’t be any view. πŸ˜€

PRO TIP: If you’re planning to catch a sunrise or sunset, check ten times if you need. Don’t be stupid like we were and go for a sunrise which won’t even happen in that place haha. First, we were lost then we ran to get there on time and then we realized the sunrise is not going to happen (it was too foggy but we were also on the wrong side :D). Well, you learn from your own mistakes. πŸ™‚

Don’t forget Savica waterfall while in Bohinj!

The magnificent Savica Waterfall is a must-see for everyone who is visiting Bohinj for the first time. This is a unique waterfall as its watercourse is divided into two parts in the hidden undergrounds. The famous A-shaped waterfall normally comes into sight at an altitude of 836 m and is 78 m high. When we were here, the higher part was completely frozen.Β  Also, there are little gates that stop you from going to the waterfall as the ground is slippery. But we wanted to film some parts there (couldn’t do it with a drone as it lost connections few times when Alen sent it to the waterfall), so we went anyway. We were going through deep snow, climb some rocks and there we were. I felt the water. It was so cold but refreshing. We spent an hour down there. It was really amazing being so close to it. Moments like that one are my favorite. And the little part of waterfall didn’t seem so little once we came close to it. πŸ˜€

You have to visit Savica waterfall if you’re in Bohinj. If you’re adventurous, you can come close to the waterfall and feel the water like we did. Great experience! πŸ™‚ P.S. you can only see the little part of waterfall in this photo as the other one was frozen. πŸ™‚

Trip duration to the waterfall is about 25 minutes. Maybe a bit longer while there is snow. And also, while there is snow, hiking to and from the waterfall is really fun. We fell a lot of times. Especially while going down. πŸ˜€ So if you’re around, make sure to visit. You won’t regret it, trust me. πŸ˜‰

It may not look dangerous, but under the snow can be ice so prepare yourself to fall down a lot. But that’s the fun part of hiking to Savica waterfall in winter. πŸ˜€

Mostnica gorge – you won’t get far without the right equipment

A post shared by Mesmerized (@be_mesmerized) on

Mostnica gorge is an amazing place in Slovenia. White cover in combination with blue clear water is just stunning. Unfortunately, it’s not approachable on foot in winter as snow is too deep. At least not if you don’t have needed equipment. That’s why we weren’t able to see all those amazing waterfalls. But if you have time, I would still recommend to come here and see that little part of Mostnica that you can. On one part you can come close to the river and jump on huge rocks and just enjoy the peacefulness of nature in winter. The only thing you’ll hear is gurgle of the river. And who wouldn’t enjoy that?

Make sure to take a minute and just enjoy the beautiful Mostnica. We certainly did. πŸ˜€

Winter activities in Bohinj

A post shared by Mesmerized (@be_mesmerized) on

Awake a child in yourself! πŸ˜€ Bohinj area has amazing winter activities, from skiing, ice- climbing, snowshoeing to sledding. As we weren’t here long enough, the best options for us were those ones that are usually considered as activities for children. Yup, that’s right, we went sledding! πŸ˜€

First of all, on our way to Bohinj, we bought some cheap plastic sleds. And we broke it very soon. πŸ˜€ So big thanks to our hosts in apartments Ε½mitek for being so kind and letting us borrow their real sleds. πŸ˜€ If you’re ever in Bohinj and need a place to stay, I can highly recommend staying at their place. The apartments are amazing and hosts are simply the best! πŸ™‚ Here’s a link to their Instagram page if you want to check them out:

Now, back to sledding. There’s a lot of places for that in Bohinj but we choose Bohinjska Bistrica. P.S. consider night sledding at Vogel (I wish we found out for that sooner, but an advanced reservation is needed so that’s the reason why we didn’t go). At first, the hill in Bohinjska Bistrica didn’t look so high but when we start sledding, it definitely lasted long. And it was pretty fun. As there were few hills, in some places you would jump in the air.

I haven’t gone sledding since I was a child and I have to say, it was so much fun. A lot of falls also haha. So don’t miss a chance just cause you think you’re too mature for that. You never are! πŸ˜› And also, don’t forget to build your snowman. We built our Mr. Mesmerized. πŸ˜€

My best friend Mr. Mesmerized and I. If you’ve seen him in Bohinj, let me know. πŸ˜€

Pokljuka is a great place for winter adventures

A post shared by Mesmerized (@be_mesmerized) on

There’s beautiful ski resort on Pokljuka. We didn’t go skiing but we went to check it out and it looked amazing. Definitely decided to go skiing next year. Also, it is a great place for hiking and snowshoeing. If there was more time, we would have done that! Instead, we just enjoyed beautiful winter scenery. The snow level was higher than me. And I’m 165 centimeters high. πŸ˜€ We took a little stroll through the woods and had a little snowball fight. I just wish we had more time to explore this area (and right equipment of course πŸ˜€ ). But what was amazing is that at one point it was so foggy you couldn’t see anything and just a few meters away it was sunny. Guess on which side we stayed. πŸ˜€ If I knew what’s going to wait for us at Bled, I would have spent the whole day just here…

Enjoy little things… πŸ™‚

Trip to Bled

Since we’ve never been to Bled (and it’s not that far away from Bohinj), visiting it was a must. We wanted to catch a sunrise at OjΕ‘trica viewpoint (the most beautiful view on Lake Bled), but the weather was so bad that that wouldn’t happen. So we went there around 9 am. I wish we haven’t as we couldn’t see anything. Literally. You weren’t able to see the island, the castle, nothing.. πŸ˜€ So we didn’t go to the viewpoints, because, why bother. It was the first time that we were on Bled and we didn’t even get a chance to see it πŸ˜€

Don’t even consider visiting Vintgar gorge during winter

A post shared by Mesmerized (@be_mesmerized) on

As Bled was a fail, we went on the only list left for us to do that day. Vntgar gorge. Vintgar gorge looked so promising. Beautiful blue clear water in combination with white snow… just perfect. We knew it’s closed during winter, but we read that you can go past the gates and enter at your own risk. And we really wanted to enter at our own risk πŸ˜€ But… Huge gates with huge spikes on top and overside and secured with barbed wire (just in case someone decides to climb it anyway).

Vintgar Gorge is highly secured so you’ll never pass through if you visit in winter.

There was no possible way to pass that. We tried to find an alternative way, but no luck. I mean, it is a gorge and the water was deep so going on the other side wasn’t an option. Later we found an information that going through the gates was possible few years ago. Not anymore. Someone really doesn’t want people visiting it during winter πŸ˜€

This is the only view of the gorge you’ll be able to see…

Accommodation recommendation – get 10% discount

If you’re ever in Bohinj, check apartments Ε½mitek. Their apartments are lovely, clean and really cozy. And they’re in a great location! You’ll be at the lake in no time. πŸ˜€ Plus, hosts are the kindest people ever! They’ll help you with anything and they’ll leave you a chocolate when you check in (chocolate lovers will understand me :D).
